01 · The programme

Five modules.
Four weeks.

One module carries each week, and the Studio Project runs alongside from day one. Mondays and Tuesdays are lectures on the IDB campus, Wednesdays and Thursdays are excursions and workshops.

ECTS measures workload, not weeks. Six US credits is a rough workload comparison for twelve ECTS, not a recognition guarantee. Your home institution alone decides how the credits count. The Studio Project is graded against your own level, so first-year students and working professionals are assessed differently while everyone sits the same course.

02 · The five weeks

Four weeks
of studio.
One of Galungan.

Galungan falls on 11 August 2027 and the university closes for the week. It is the biggest day in the Balinese year, and you are on the island for it. That is why the 2027 edition runs five weeks instead of four.

Week 1
Roots.
Balinese landscape and architecture. Village and temple visits, sketching, the philosophy the island builds on.
Week 2
Resorts.
Villa and hospitality design on site, at the projects you have only seen in magazines.
Week 3
Galungan.
No classes. The biggest day in the Balinese year falls on 11 August, and you are on the island for it. Penjor on every street, families travelling home, ceremonies everywhere.
Week 4
Bamboo.
Green design and interiors. Working with bamboo, timber and local material in a tropical climate.
Week 5
Finals.
Studio Project presentations in front of Balinese architects. Kuningan on 21 August, then graduation.
03 · Why here

The buildings
you study are
being built.

An architecture course in a place where the subject is not history. It is the construction site down the road.

Tradition meets a booming tourism industry

Balinese architecture is not a museum piece here. It is what is being built right now, in a place where a booming tourism industry meets a building tradition that is centuries old, and the tension between the two is the thing you get to design into.

You study at Institut Desain dan Bisnis Bali, but a good part of the teaching happens outside the studio. At temples, in villages, on the sites of resorts built around exactly the questions you are working on. Four weeks of that, and you look at buildings differently for good.

My experience studying in Bali really can't even be described in words. It's mind-blowing how immersive the programme has been. Everything about the month was so worth it. If you're thinking about joining StudyInBali, don't even think about it anymore, join it. It's literally life-changing.

Kenza
Summer School · Morocco

I came from Morocco, from another culture, and it was super inspiring to learn about Balinese culture and all these architectures in Bali. We come back to Morocco creating the same vision of mixing old culture and new culture, to create harmony in the houses.

Kayleigh Davies
Summer School · United Kingdom

I came here 2 years ago and fell in love with the country, and this gives you such a good opportunity to learn more about the culture, the way that they design over here. It's just an amazing experience.

Awab Mohamed
Summer School · Sudan

Got the chance to explore Bali and its mesmerizing architecture in the best way possible, with people from more than 21 different countries whom now I can call my friends. Simply the best four weeks of my life.

Marina Mirea
Summer School · Romania

It's been amazing meeting people from 21 different countries, doing excursions together, workshops together. We had so much fun. Everyone is so welcoming and you feel so at home in a place that you've never been, and that's incredible.

Alkistis Triantafyllopoulou

It has truly been such a beautiful experience, and I'm so grateful for all the wonderful people I've met along the way. A special thank you to the teachers and lecturers from IDB for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.

Sonja Manasijevikj

Being part of this summer school has been such an amazing experience. I deeply appreciate the effort of all organizers and lecturers who gave us not just knowledge, but also motivation and guidance that will stay with us for long.

Kirsten Holtmans
Summer School · Netherlands

The summer school brings together a group of students from all over the world, all with different backgrounds. We learned a lot about the difference between Eastern and Western culture. It is great to learn in such a nice environment.

05 · Frequently asked

Quick
answers.

What does the VIP list actually get me?
Three things. Registration opens to the list first, from 1 to 15 October 2026, two weeks before it goes public. Everyone on the list registers € 200 below the Early Bird price, the lowest of the year. And you pick your accommodation first, and the best places fill up first every year. Joining costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
What does the Summer School cost?
For 2027 the visa is included in the price for the first time. Early Bird is € 2,050, the regular price € 2,250, and late registration € 2,450. The VIP list registers at € 1,850, €200 below Early Bird and the lowest price of the year.
When does the list close?
30 September 2026. After that the VIP window opens without you and registration moves to the public phases.
Why is it five weeks if the programme is four?
Because of Galungan, the most important day in the Balinese year, roughly what Christmas is here. It falls on 11 August 2027, and the university closes for that week. You are on the island while the whole place celebrates, and Kuningan follows on 21 August. Four weeks of programme, five weeks on Bali.
Do I have to be an architecture student?
No. The 2026 group was 24 students, 7 working professionals and 3 graduates, from architecture, interior design and landscape design. If you work with space and you are serious about the material, you are in the right room.
Will my home university accept the credits?
The programme documents up to 12 ECTS. About 6 US credits is a rough workload comparison, not a recognition guarantee. You receive a certificate and transcript from Institut Desain dan Bisnis Bali. Your home institution alone decides whether and how the credits count, so confirm this before you register.
What about the visa?
Students travel on a C-9 student visa, and for 2027 it is included in the programme price. The university applies for it on your behalf and we walk you through the paperwork step by step. A tourist visa or visa on arrival is not permitted for study, not even for a short course like this one.
Where do students live?
You choose from a set of student stays we arrange, from co-livings a few minutes from campus in Denpasar to guesthouses in Sanur and Canggu. Options and current prices come with your registration, and booking through us is optional. The best places fill up first, and the VIP window picks first.
