Southeast Asian
Engineering
A semester studying engineering where it is hardest and most alive: seismic ground, tropical materials, renewable energy and the logic of building in Southeast Asia.
Apply now →Registration for Summer Class 2027 is open at the Early Bird fee. It holds until 30 September, then the fee steps up. Winter Class 2026 has closed, so this is the next intake.

This is what a Southeast Asian Engineering semester actually runs on.
Program recap2 minutes · a real Engineering session
Eight modules.
you take six.
Four core modules for everyone, plus two from the track you choose. Taught, examined and credited by Universitas Udayana. 30 ECTS total. The academic documents come from Universitas Udayana; we help you provide them to your home registrar.
Civil Engineering track: you add Earthquake Science and Urban Transportation to the four core modules.
Bio-energy, solar, wind, hydro and geothermal read for the tropics, with the technical, ecological and economic case for each and fieldwork at real renewable-energy sites.
Timber, bamboo and bio-materials of Indonesia: their mechanical and structural properties, and green, low-waste ways to put them to work in engineering.
Your own research question, chosen with a professor, comparing a Bali engineering challenge with home. Weekly consultations, a paper of at least twenty pages, a final presentation.
Functional Bahasa Indonesia for daily life, from greetings to shopping, plus the cultural context that makes the rest of the semester make sense.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Ground motion, seismic hazard analysis and structures designed to survive an earthquake, worked through to modern building codes.
Urban transport across Southeast Asia with Bali as the live case study: road networks, public transport, non-motorised mobility, road safety and sustainable development.
Conventional and non-conventional manufacturing, taught through the making of Balinese gamelan instruments: casting, metallurgy, heat treatment and process design.
Technology across traditional and modern industry: green technology, ICT, entrepreneurship and a fieldwork visit to a working industrial site.
ECTS, a full semester of accredited work. Transcript and Letter of Completion from Universitas Udayana travel home with you.
Excursions and workshops are a required part of the curriculum and count toward the attendance rule.

Lectures, fieldwork
and free Fridays.
follow the teaching week day by day ↓
MondayCampus lecturesTheory and tutorials at the Sudirman Campus: renewable energy, materials, your track and language.
TuesdayCampus lecturesMore lectures, group discussion and time on your Student Project with the faculty.
WednesdayCampus lecturesThe third campus day closes the teaching week before you head out into the field.
ThursdayField dayWorkshops, site visits and excursions matched to the week's module. Required, and part of the academic workload.
FridayFree FridayRest, self-study or explore the island. A two-week break also sits in the middle of the semester.
A research paper
and up to 30 ECTS.
Your Student Project: a real engineering question compared across Bali and home, backed by a paper of at least twenty pages and presented to faculty and peers.
An official certificate and academic transcript from Universitas Udayana documenting up to 30 ECTS. Your home institution alone decides recognition, so confirm this with your registrar. A certificate needs at least 20 ECTS; the full 30 is recommended.
Students who arrive with different backgrounds, engineering fields and levels. You arrive alone and leave with a group chat that never goes quiet.
Seismic ground, tropical materials, renewable energy. Once you have engineered on the Ring of Fire, you read every structure differently.

Dates and fees,

Bali's oldest
state university.
Universitas Udayana is Bali's oldest state university, founded in 1962 and home to more than 28,000 students. Your Engineering modules are taught at the Faculty of Engineering on the Sudirman Campus in Denpasar, and the university is recognized by the Indonesian Ministry of Education. Its faculty teaches, examines and credits your modules, issues your transcript, and sponsors your student visa.

Good
to know.
Living in Bali, the E-30 visa and funding.
on this programShared villas or guesthouses in Canggu or Umalas, usually with your own cohort. Once you are confirmed you get our map of places past students recommend, and a spot in the community group where the cohort teams up on houses long before anyone flies.
VisaWhat about the visa?→An E-30 student visa, sponsored and applied for by Universitas Udayana. Studying on a tourist visa is not allowed in Indonesia. You send passport scans and a photo, the rest is handled before you fly.
FundingCan I afford this?→This is the most affordable semester in the catalogue. Early Bird saves against the Late phase, and the €350 registration is refundable when you cancel more than 8 weeks before intake, minus a €100 processing fee.
