Welcome dinner for the Winter Class 2026 at Universitas Udayana

The semester at Universitas Udayana started on 7 September. The evening before, the new students met each other for the first time at the welcome dinner on the beach.

Every semester starts with the same evening: the day before the first lecture, the new students meet at a beach restaurant for the welcome dinner. Most of them see each other for the first time there.

Who arrived

This semester, students in three programs started at Universitas Udayana: Sports & Physiotherapy, Southeast Asian Architecture and Southeast Asian Engineering.

Balinese dress for the evening

Before the dinner, everyone is dressed the Balinese way. A sarong tied at the waist, an udeng for the men, a frangipani or marigold for the women. This is the dress code for visiting a temple in Bali, and the semester includes several temple visits.

The speeches

There is a microphone, and it goes round. The campus team introduces the programs and the first week, and then the students take the mic themselves. Where they are from, what they study, why Bali. Some had their lines on paper, some did not.

Dinner and fire show

Dinner is a Balinese buffet under a palm-leaf roof, tables set in the sand, the sun going down behind the umbrellas. After dessert the beach goes dark and the fire dancers arrive. The brave ones from the group get to try a torch themselves.

What happens next

Lectures started on Monday, 7 September, and the semester runs until 18 December. The first weeks are orientation and the opening modules on campus; excursion days begin soon after. We will post from the first field trips here.
